Knowledge is NOT Power

It is commonly believed that there is a simple formula that
defines what knowledge will do for you; Knowledge = Power.
This is completely untrue on its own.
Regardless of what “power” means to you – authority, influence,
money, happiness… no amount of knowledge will get you any of these
without applying action to it.
Following our quote of the week by Ralph Waldo Emersen, “Nothing
great was ever achieved without enthusiasm”, I would like to point
out that without action - ideally enthusiastic and passionate
action, nothing has ever been accomplished. Furthermore, the
power that people seek through their knowledge is always achieved
through their accomplishments and the action that they took to
attain them.
A person can graduate at the top of their medicine or law class, but
still make nothing of themselves without the motivation or ability
to apply their knowledge. Taking action is the key to turning
knowledge into power. Knowledge is only a piece of the puzzle,
and a little bit of knowledge can be very powerful if it’s applied
properly, while a lot of knowledge can, and often does, completely
go to waste in the hands of a person without the motivation to use
it.
Knowledge can topple governments, it can create empires and it
can also do absolutely nothing.
While it is a simple concept, most people rarely apply it.
People find the answers to all of their problems, they learn how to
gain the authority, influence, money and happiness but they are
comfortable enough in the place they are currently at that they
choose not to make any changes. Success is easy, but not doing
anything at all is easier!
You may have students that feel that the knowledge that you have
passed to them gives them the power to defend themselves.
This, of course, is untrue if the student is unable to physically
execute what they have learned. They have to be physically strong
enough to use what you have taught them, and resolute enough not to
back down when their skills are called to use. These students
may have the knowledge, but can they follow through?
Your competitor may have been attending all of the newest courses
about how to build the biggest martial arts or fitness club, they
may be learning all about how to use the software, build the leads,
close the sales and keep their students around – but what action do
they take? What action will you take?
I recommend learning as much as you can, and if you’re reading
this article today you are likely a person who is hungry for
knowledge, but I also urge you to consider all of the great ideas
and opportunities that have been presented to you and think about
how many you could have or should have taken action on. If you
are in a position of authority and wealth, you made use of some of
the knowledge that has been bestowed upon you and are more powerful
because of it. If you are struggling, don’t worry – you have all of
the tools you need to make any change you want. All you have
to do is to take action!
To summarize, Knowledge + Action = Power
