Coach K, the Head Basket Ball Coach at Duke University says,

“I don’t look at myself as a basketball coach, I look at myself as a leader who happens to coach basketball.”

The ONE Rule for Coach K’s team is,

“Don’t do anything that is detrimental to the team.”

Top 5 Situations (In my opinion) that may be detrimental to a Martial Arts Business Team

1. Lateness-Destroys trust and accountability
2. “What about me attitude” –Putting yourself before the team. Coach K doesn’t recruit players that aren’t about the team first, stats second.
3. Not finishing tasks on time
4. Embarrassing other team members in front of others.
5. Bringing personal problems into your business.

Updating your leadership Skills

Top 5 Tips

1. Remember it’s done daily-Not yearly or quarterly
2. If you're not, how do expect others team members to do so
3. Reading, listening to audiotapes, networking, having a mentor, mentoring others.
4. Increasing your mental, physical, and spiritual attributes. Most people work on two of the three. Are you working on all three?
5. Leadership Notebook- I started this about 2 months ago. I started tracking all events in my life that pertained to leadership, and tracked the following.
a. How did I handle the situation?
b. Was there anything that I would do differently next time?
c. What do other leaders feel about how it was handled?

Leadership Role Playing

1. Have you ever done this?
2. Did you ever do this with your staff?
3. Did you ever do this for someone you mentor?

Two Ways to do it

1. Written
2. Actual Scenarios

Written Sample

Please read the following situation and explain in detail how you would handle the situation.

Craig has been working the martial arts studio for a few weeks. You are the manger. You hear Craig telling a parent about his credit card debt. You proceed to listen as you're greeting the students coming into your school. He then goes on and says that because he is paid such a small salary at the studio it will be hard to get out of debt.

How you would handle the situation?
